Sinterklaas is weer in het land dus is het de hoogste tijd voor de jaarlijkse ‘Grote Kruidnoten Bakwedstrijd’. Bakkers uit het hele land strijden om de titel: Meesterbakker van het Jaar. Ook Marco Marsepein is vastberaden om te winnen, dat lukt hem immers ieder jaar. Het geheime recept van zijn allerliefste oma heeft hem nog nooit in de steek gelaten. Maar... dit jaar strijden Bartus Bakker en zijn vader ook om die felbegeerde eerste plek. Het gemene bakkersduo weet op slinkse wijze het geheime recept van Marco te stelen en zijn kruidnotendeeg te verpesten. Als Bartus Bakker dan ook de bakwedstrijd wint, is Marco volledig verslagen. Hij besluit het kasteel van Sinterklaas te verlaten om voor eens en altijd terug te keren naar zijn geboorteland Italië. Maar wat is het grote Sinterklaasfeest zonder Marco Marsepein en zijn kruidnoten?
