Ondertussen verslechtert de situatie in Algerije. In 1956 levert Camus een vreedzaam pleidooi voor een oplossing van het conflict. Tegelijkertijd publiceert hij "La Chute", waarin hij het existentialisme bekritiseert. Een jaar later ontvangt hij de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur.
